In Hawaiian, the name mahi-mahi means “very strong”. This species of fish is also known as the common dolphinfish, though not related to dolphins, and is found around the world in tropical and subtropical waters. It prefers living near the surface.

The species is also called dorado due its ability to change color when out of the water.

The mahi-mahi’s diet consists of crustaceans, zooplankton, squid, crabs and mackerel. An amazing 80,000 to 1,000,000 eggs are produced by females spawning two to three times a year. The species lives on average up to four years.

Mahi-mahi are fished extensively by the sport and commercial fishing industries.
